Extension Services

The principal activity of Extension Service of the Coffee Board is to transfer of coffee technologies standardised by the research department to the coffee growers for achieving better production/productivity vis-a-vis improving the quality of coffee. Thus it helps to bridge the gap between coffee planters and research scientists in implementation of coffee technology in the coffee estates.

Around 3.47 lakh hectares cultivated by over 1.64 lakh growers are covered by the extension service in the traditional tracts of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The Joint Director of Extension at Hassan monitors and guides the extension activities of the four Dy. Directors of Extension, Seven Senior Liaison Officers and twenty three Junior Liaison Officers in Karnataka.

The Joint Director of Extension at Kalpetta monitors and guides the extension activities of two Dy. Directors of Extension, eight Senior Liaison Officers and thirteen Junior Liaison Officers in Kerala and Tamil Nadu States.

The Director of Research, Central Coffee Research Institute, is in overall supervision for implementation of Extension Plan Programmes and Extension Services.

The Planning and Co-ordination of various schemes/activities and monitoring of the same is done by the Planning & Co-ordination Cell at HO, Bangalore.

Extension Programmes:

The main extension programmes envisaged are as follows:

• Execution of various on-going extension plan schemes as per the calendar of events chalked out/envisaged.

• Conducting Method Demonstrations / On-farm Demonstrations to improve the skills of carrying out operation effectively.

• Conducting village level/group meetings and seminars.

• Conducting Mass Contact/Mass Communication Programmes, media campaigns and other training programmes to improve the knowledge and skill levels of coffee growers and workers in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamilnadu.

• Conducting Vocational Training programmes for women workers / growers.

• Surveys on crop prospects and projecting crop estimations, outbreak of pests and diseases etc.

• Collection and furnishing of monthly rainfall data and rendering suitable advises to the planting community.

• Up keep of TECs and adoption of the Annual Action Plan to improve production / productivity of the Farms.

• Supply of seed coffee of elite plant materials to the coffee growers.

Group Gatherings/Seminars/Contact cum assessment campaign:

Extension officers conduct village level group gatherings, awareness campaign and seminars on various aspects of coffee for the benefit of both large and small coffee growers periodically at different zones of coffee areas.

EXTENSION SERVICES PROVIDED BY COFFEE BOARD IN THE NON-TRADITIONAL STATES OF ANDHRA PRADESH AND ODISHA


A) Andhra Pradesh :

Coffee is cultivated in an extent of 58,131 ha. and is owned by 1,15,883 growers. The Extension Activities include transfer of technology through contact and follow up visits to coffee holdings, conducting field demonstrations, group discussions, issue of advisory letters, quality awareness campaigns etc., for improvement in production, productivity and quality of coffee in the tribal sector. The other activities include conducting study tour of tribal growers to the traditional coffee growing areas. The Technology Evaluation Centre located at Minimuluru serves as a demonstration farm of location specific technologies for the region. The Mini Coffee Curing Works located at Chintapalli processes the raw coffee pooled by the tribal growers.


B) Odisha :

Coffee is cultivated in an extent of 3935 ha in Odisha and is owned by 2545 growers. The Extension Activities include transfer of technology through contact and follow up visits to coffee holdings, conducting field demonstrations, group discussions, issue of advisory letters, quality awareness campaigns etc., for improvement in production, productivity and quality of coffee in the tribal sector. The other activities include conducting study tour of tribal growers to the traditional coffee growing areas. The Technology Evaluation Centre located at Koraput serves as a demonstration farm of location specific technologies for the region. In Non-traditional Area (Andhra Pradesh & Odisha), the Joint Director (Extension) at Visakhapatnam monitors and guides the extension activities of one Dy. Director of Extension, two Senior Liaison Officers and three Junior Liaison Officers.

EXTENSION SERVICES PROVIDED BY COFFEE BOARD IN THE NORTH EASTERN REGION

Coffee is cultivated in an extent of 6,039 ha. in the seven North Eastern States viz., Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. The extension activities include transfer of technology, method demonstrations, group gatherings, quality awareness campaigns, conducting training programmes at TECs and study tour of tribal growers to the traditional coffee growing areas. Four Technology Evaluation Centres located at Baulpui (Mizoram), Haflong (N.C. Hills, Assam), Deomali (Arunachal Pradesh) and Tulakona (Agartala, Tripura) serves as demonstration farms of location specific technologies for the region. The Coffee Processing Factory at Lokhra, Guwahati and the Mini Coffee Curing Works at Baulpui, Mizoram process the raw coffee pooled by the tribal growers.

In North Eastern Region (Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur), the Joint Director (Extension) at Guwahati monitors and guides the extension activities of two Dy. Directors of Extension, six Senior Liaison Officers and one Junior Liaison Officer.
